When Lois was in high school, she had established a reputation as a studious individual who rarely, if ever, let her hair down by drinking with her friends. She seemed driven to excel academically so that she would be able to pursue a career that she not only enjoyed but one that also gave her some monetary security.

After Lois finished high school, she applied to and was accepted into an esteemed program in philosophy. Her analysis of her options regarding this decision was based on the fact that this subject matter would be a good foundation for law school and would not be similar to the majority of law school applicants who major in political science at the undergraduate level.

Lois was the kind of individual who worked in a diligent manner to finish what she started and then would take a few days off when she could. It just so happens, however, that the vast majority of the things she did between terms or during summer breaks did not have much to do with drinking. Needless to say, Lois was anything but a party-girl. Now that her final examinations for her second year in law school were over and feeling proud of the fact that she had done a super job on her exams, however, she felt like celebrating.

So Lois and a few of her friends went to a local nightclub where they had a few glasses of wine. As the evening went by, Lois and her pals continued to drink. If truth be told, she was having such a good time that she didn't want the night to end.

After drinking about an hour when Lois started to slur her speech, talk in a confused manner, and then fall unconscious, in spite of this, her friends promptly realized that they needed to call that they needed to call 911 and ask for medical assistance because they suspected that Lois was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.

Lois was very aware that she had narrowly escaped death from an alcohol overdose and, as a result, was grateful to be alive. At the same time, nevertheless, she was somewhat depressed knowing that she had almost died the previous night. Her parents knew how relentlessly she worked at school and how little she let herself socialize with her buddies. Nevertheless, they also knew that Lois needed to avoid abusive and excessive drinking.

As a result, they suggested that down the road, whenever a drinking situation arises, that she always drink responsibly and in moderation. Lois agreed and swore to her parents and to her friends that she would never again drink in a hazardous manner. In her own words, "I never had a clue that I might become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local university newspaper. I now realize that abusive and irresponsible drinking is not for me. I guarantee that this will never happen again."

Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also possessed. In other words, she immediately knew that she had made a mistake and decided that she would not make the same error again. In fact, she now realized that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this form of irresponsible drinking can end in a loss of life.
