Richard had a hard time keeping a job. To be sure, due to his lethargy and lack of motivation, he was unemployed far more frequently than he was in work. And when he did get a job, he had a hard time getting to work in a timely manner, he characteristically received less than positive performance appraisals, and he called off sick so frequently that he usually got fired three or four weeks after he started working.

Not surprisingly, one of the results of Richard's unacceptable employment history was the fact that he was without much money much of the time. In spite of Richard's shameful work history and financial negligence, then again, somehow he managed to drink in a hazardous manner much of the time.

So it came as no big surprise when Richard got arrested for a second DUI. When he went before the court, the magistrate told Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was awful and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to serve ten months in jail.

During his time in jail, Richard was expected to learn more about alcoholism facts such as alcohol consequences and alcohol deaths, about the unhealthy outcomes of abusive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol treatment. The judge emphasized the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol therapy and learns how to live a life of sobriety, he will probably be spending a lot more time in jail.

Richard articulated that he understood what the judge was asserting but he still proclaimed that jail was not the best punishment. The judge disagreed and stated that it was his responsibility to keep people off the streets who drink and drive and who get arrested for a DUI. To validate this view, the judge quoted some venerable, thoroughly researched alcohol abuse and alcoholism facts and statistics that underlined some of the disruptive consequences that are related to abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Even though Richard comprehended that he drank excessively, he never thought that he was an alcohol addicted person. So it was a real shocker when Richard started to experience chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms around two-and-a-half hours after getting locked up in the local jail.

To manage his alcohol withdrawals in a harm free manner, Richard was taken by ambulance to an alcohol rehab hospital for alcohol detox and then returned to jail. While in jail Richard undertook alcohol treatment but because he received this counseling as something that was imposed upon him, he failed to take ownership of his excessive and abusive drinking.

When his time in jail was completed, the magistrate told Richard that he would be under close scrutiny and would be mandated to take periodic alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking problem and how he reluctantly followed the treatment modus operandi while in jail, the judge knew that it was essentially a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his excessive drinking behavior.

As the judge reflected on Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some people never "connect the dots" and discover how to live in a responsible manner.
