Stephen was a seventeen year old high school senior who was displaying quite a few alcohol-related difficulties at school. As a result, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to come back to class.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school situation with his Mom and Dad. His Mother and Father were "fairly old-style" and informed Stephen that getting suspended from school was not a feasible educational option. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would likely be like a lead weight around his ankles that could conceivably encumber his educational aspirations for the remainder of his life. What is more, Stephen's Mom and Dad were quite dismayed that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his peers in the second.
It was plain to see that his Mom and Dad were absolutely in agreement with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better make up his mind to see Miss Pender, the school counselor. After his discussion with his parents, Stephen eventually agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen phoned the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his fifth period class.
When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantly surveyed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had experienced and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related behavior made the school administrators uneasy.
Quite candidly, Stephen wondered why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional psychologist about his drinking activities? Due to the fact that nearly all of his peers drink the same amount that he does, essentially, drinking shouldn't be such a big issue. Stated more forcefully, if nearly everyone is drinking, why is this such a major problem?
In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to foil his ability to conduct himself like an accountable young man. As stated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your peers drink wine coolers, beer, hard liquor, or wine does not mean that it's the healthiest thing in the world for you."
Fortunately, Miss Pender was well equipped for her appointment with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had highlighted that listed diverse drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a lot of information that applied particularly to adolescents.
After Miss Pender conveyed the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was apparent that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a real bombshell to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to give an explanation of the short term and the long term consequences of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction, but she also made the effort to confirm what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcoholism statistics and facts that related to everyone in general, and chiefly to today's youth.
To be sure, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen without pause grasped why he should not be engaging in hazardous and excessive drinking with or without his peers anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the materials she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
