Exactly why dog lovers have got this preconceived notion that small breed pups are more difficult to condition than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should not pose a problem.

Small dog training, is not different from training a dog of any other size. Although training any puppy will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, most all other aspects remain identical, and the strategy to training the dog should stay the same, irrespective its size.

However, I will make an exception here, and agrree that small dog training may pose problems in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nevertheless, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.

If a small breed dog is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a smaller breed puppy cannot be potty trained or poses challenges in being toilet trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us examine how and why.

Aggression.

Smaller dogs are loved because they are pretty, they are like toys. Owners enjoy having their puppy sit on their laps. This particular indulgence is where the problem commences. The natural aggressive nature of the canine, is to assert ownership over its domain, its food, even its master; all puppies desire to be the alpha dog.

It is the ruthless streak in the puppy that causes it to get on to the lap of its master, particularly when there are a number of people seated in the room.

This is a clear act of ruthlessness. Instead of chiding the animal, every owner with the exception of no one, would cuddle the pup, although it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, fostering the aggressive streak in the dog. In this way the owner has okayed the dog's inherent need to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting angry at a bigger dog is another blatant act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is regarded as cute, mainly because one dog is tiny while the other is big. Most owners praise the dog instead of checking it, when it demonstrates this aggression against a larger dog.

These are but good examples as to why small size breed puppies are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is problematic.

Bathroom Training

Owners have a propensity to carry their small dogs around where ever they are, even when they are at home and that makes it very difficult to potty train them

It comes natural to the owners of small breed dogs to carry the animal to the place where the dog should do its dirty business and then lug it back into the house.

It is this pattern of carrying the pup to the outdoors to poop that is the cause of all problems. In addition, as the pup is by and large carried around all the time it has no way of it indicating to or notifying the owner that it has to go to the bathroom.

Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be taken to their potty area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their small sized dogs they would be very successful in training them.

Dog crate training, is the best part of pup training, and so it must be, even in Small Dog Training.
